About 20 years ago, before I had any children of my own, my boss’s daughter was diagnosed with neuroblastoma- brain cancer. Ava fought very hard and lost her hair during the harsh treatment. I began donating my hair that year. Ultimately the cancer took over and she passed away at age 5, leaving behind a twin sister and her parents.
In 2017, I met an amazing boy named Wes who was battling the same type of cancer. He fought for 7 long years, and during all that time he chose to give back to other children in treatment by starting annual toy drive and raising funds for wildlife. I had a donation box in our store that year, and talked with him and his mom for hours, an unforgettable experience with an incredible person! Although he is forever 12, his family continues to host the toy drive and support wildlife in his memory.
I have since had friends and family tell me of other children who are affected by this awful thing called cancer and this is how I can make a difference. This charity keeps very little for themselves, as their goal is to fund research that will someday bring appropriate pediatric treatments to cure these Angel warriors.
