I'm Riding For

Elliot Kelley

Elliot Kelley

Elliot is in a fight with leukemia and he has the spirit to beat it. He is one tough cookie. His joyous spirit and positive disposition have never diminished, despite his many health issues. Elliot was born with Down Syndrome, during the world’s Covid pandemic. Unfortunately, he contracted Covid when he was a couple months old and was hospitalized for several weeks. He has had issues with his kidneys, stemming from Megaureter. He required surgery to fix that issue. He has had Speech, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and even Music therapy. Some of these services since he was just several months old. When old enough to walk, he required a walker to support himself. This is typical with kids who have Down syndrome. They struggle to walk because of weaker muscles. As he got stronger, he transitioned from the walker to wearing leg braces. Elliot was hospitalized for pneumonia and para flu. It was while being treated for pneumonia, that he was diagnosed with leukemia. The kid can't catch a break.

My Story

28 Oct 2025

I am participating in my 11th Great Cycle Challenge. The purpose of this event is to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. I have to admit that as I age (I am 74 years young) the pedaling is getting a bit harder each year. Yet, I am fortunate to be able to still ride. There are many kids that will never have the opportunity to reach my age, or even have the chance to ride a bike, as cancer will end their life much too early.

While there has been tremendous progress in fighting pediatric cancer, it is still impacting the health and lives of too many kids.

So I am once again raising funds for the Children's Cancer Research Fund to help find a cure . The money you donate will allow them to continue their work in funding lifesaving research. Every dollar will bring us one step closer to helping another child beat this disease.

Your support does, and will, change little lives for the better. Thank You!

A word about my goals. My riding goal is 493 miles. If I reach it, I will have ridden 13,000 miles during the Great Cycle Challenges I have participated in. More importantly, if I can reach my fundraising goal, I will have raised $160,000 to beat kids' cancer. It would be even better if we can SURPASS that goal and give kids like Elliot a better chance at beating cancer. A HUGE thanks to everyone who has helped me reach these numbers.

With sincere gratitude,

Mike

P.S. Cancer patients receiving chemotherapy often have a critical need blood and/or platelet transfusions. I now give platelets every two or three weeks. Platelets only have a five day shelf life resulting in a constant demand. Please give if you can.

My Challenge

  • A crap shoot.
    27 Oct 2025

For many children with cancer, their treatments are a "crap shoot." Why, because the treatments they are given are with drugs created for adults, not specifically for a child's body. As a result, more than 90% will have health issues later in life. And at worst, they won't survive their treatment. When you play craps, a 7 or 11 on your first role is a winner. That got me thinking about those numbers. This is my 11th year riding in the GCC. So, I have one of the winning numbers. What would represent the 7? Well, I am currently the 8th highest fundraiser this year. With a week left in the fundraising period, I am now aiming to get to 7th. I am close. If you click on the individual leaderboard menu option, you can see the standings. Your donation will support the pediatric cancer research to one day help all kids become winners,

    A crap shoot.

  • Will your name be on my back?
    25 Oct 2025

To honor those that donate to the Great Cycle Challenge, I am having a custom jersey made with the names of my 2025 supporters. You had my back, and now I will be wearing your name on mine. There is still time to have your name added. A donation of ANY amount will put your name on the jersey. I did this a few years ago. This is a picture of that jersey. You can see that I have been wearing the jersey as ride with Woody this year. Let's see how far we can EXCEED my fundraising goal.

  • A cancer journey takes many turns
    15 Oct 2025

Elliot needed to go back to the hospital to have his G-tube (gastrostomy tube) replaced. A G-tube is used in cancer treatment primarily to provide nutrition and hydration when a patient cannot eat or drink enough due to side effects like pain, nausea, or difficulty swallowing. Using a G-tube helps patients maintain strength, better tolerate treatment, and recover more quickly, as malnutrition can negatively impact the treatment's effectiveness and a patient's recovery. Elliot is one tough cookie. He never complains, regardless of what he has to endure in his fight with cancer.

  • Woody has been with me every mile
    9 Oct 2025

How do I connect with a four-year old that I am riding for when he is in the hospital more than one hundred miles away? I do it by finding out his favorite movie or cartoon character. I then buy two dolls of that character. I send one to the child, and keep one for myself. In Elliot's case, that character is Woody from Toy Story. I will carry my "Woody" on each of my rides. It is my way of having Elliot with me on every mile I pedal. Woody and I have now biked together for more than 500 miles. This includes rides in on gravel roads in Vermont (see picture).

From living at 1928 North Broad Street on the Temple campus to a room at Temple Hospital. You never where life will take you. Your donation will help kids who are also facing a health issue.
